Keswick Museum

Keswick Museum is located in the beautiful art and craft building on Fitz Park. It houses a wonderful collection telling the story of Keswick and the surrounding area within its two main galleries.

The 2023 programme sees two exhibitions running alongside the museum’s usual displays. Flood! begins on June 10. It will explore past and present flooding in and around Keswick and ask why the area is so prone to floods and what can be done about it. From July 8, 2023 until summer 2024, Explorations and Experiments: Early Scientific Discoveries in the Lakes will tell the story of scientific explorers John Dalton and Jonathan Otley and show how their experiments on the Cumbrian fells led to Dalton’s breakthrough atomic theory.

Summer activities take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays and there is an I-Spy trail around Fitz Park. Trail sheets can be collected from the museum.

Sample the delights of Café West located underneath the museum with outside seating overlooking Fitz Park (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).

The museum is open 10am–4pm every day except Christmas.

Admission £5 for adults and £3 for students/children. Under 5s go free. All entries are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

Theatre by the Lake

Theatre by the Lake has one of the most beautiful settings of any theatre in the UK, perched on the shores of Derwentwater. It has been described by The New Statesman as “artistically sharp and stunningly situated”.

The theatre hosts a selection of in-house productions throughout the year, including Blonde Bombshells of 1943, running from July 5 to 29, and The 39 Steps, from August 3 to September 2.

Written by Alan Plater, Blonde Bombshells of 1943 is a warm and witty musical play filled with glorious live swing performances of 1940s classics by Glen Miller, The Andrews Sisters, George Formby and Fats Waller. The Blonde Bombshells, the most glamorous all-girl swing band in the North, loses members every time it plays a GI camp. Now there’s an important BBC job in the offing and Betty needs to find new musicians fast!

From the John Buchan novel and Alfred Hitchcock movie, The 39 Steps is a gripping and hilarious whodunit from the Director of the 2022 stage production of Brief Encounter. Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced Olivier-Award-winning mystery for anyone who loves the magic of theatre.

For those looking for something on a local theme, Wordsworth Grasmere is bringing The Lakers to the theatre from July 12 to 15, telling the hilarious tale of the merry Lakers - tourists of 1798 coming to the Lake District.

Details of other events coming up at the theatre are available on its website.
